PROPORTIONS - 2018

A choreographic performance for one female body, two eyes and fabric.
In Proportions,’ the performer is completely covered in a large fabric. The inspiration for this element was drawn from the fabric worn by women around the world and in various cultures to cover different parts of the body. In ‘Proportions’, the very body parts that are deemed evocative and masked by some emerge from the all-covering fabric, isolated and alienated from the rest of the body.

The performer uses the body and the performative event to touch on cultural mechanisms that relate to the female body and to examine its modes of representation.
A stratified action of erasure, rupture, covering and exposure present a choreography of striking and surprising images of the body. In Proportions, the female body is alienated from its familiar cultural context and presented as fragmented, a field of framed glances.
The performance is accompanied by a unique soundscape, which is composed of obsessively looped excerpts from cosmetic commercials. It adds an ironic layer to the work, reflecting upon the culture of consumption and its ever-growing desire to commodify the female body.
